A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

A dead end? It sure is…

Written June 17th, 2013 by

Ever wonder what happens to a store property near a freeway off-ramp after the off-ramp is closed? A few days ago my bicycle took me to the end of Hoefer Road, which I’m mispronouncing in this video. I’m told the locals say “Hayfer,” though I can’t see how this is justified by the spelling. In any case, […]

Cycling in the country — and it’s free

Written June 15th, 2013 by

Most good things cost something. But once you have a bicycle and a small assortment of equipment, riding through the countryside is absolutely free. It’s amazing there’s no charge for something that enjoyable. Here are some further thoughts — not exactly organized thoughts — on that theme from Meadow Road south of Albany.

An afternoon on Freeway Lakes

Written June 10th, 2013 by

Freeway Lakes southeast of Albany may not be the south of France, but it’s still a nice place for an hour or two on the water. And it’s close, just about the only lake within 15 minutes’ drive of Albany. Bigger lakes are an hour or more away. On a Sunday afternoon, you’ll see a few people […]

Producers from around the valley offer their farm products including plants, cut flowers, bakery items and, as the season progresses, lots of other edible goods. Usually […]

On a slow day, check out pheasants…

Written April 14th, 2013 by

When you have extra time on your hands in the mid-valley, you may want to visit the bird cages at the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area off Camp Adair Road in north Benton County. The Department of Fish and Wildlife has displayed pheasants and other game birds there for many years. (hh)
