Look at the spruced-up community center

Written March 22nd, 2022 by Hasso Hering

This section of the Riverfront Community center has the feel of a living room.

As you know by now, the Albany Senior Center has been transformed into the Riverfront Community Center, and on Thursday (March 24) there’s a “grand celebration” to mark its reopening after the closure and interior remodeling during the Covid pandemic.

The place remains where it was before, in Monteith Riverpark at the north end of Washington Street. On Tuesday I walked in to see how the interior has been spruced up.

Hardly anyone was there, which is why the photos below are entirely unpopulated. But as you can see, the center looks nice.

Tables and seating outside the little coffee shop.

More seating, some of it with a view out on the park and the Willamette River.

A place for … what? Connecting via laptop computers or charging cell phones?

I picked up a flier on the public celebration scheduled Thursday. It says there will be a “senior sneak-peek” from 8:30 to 10 a.m., followed by the “community celebration” from 2 to 4 p.m.

There will be tours of the 10,000-sqare-foot center. People who attend can visit with the staff. And for kids, Parks and Rec has promised activities during the afternoon portion of the event.

I’ve heard a little grumbling about changes in the program of what used to be the senior center. People with questions and concerns would do well to go visit the place on Thursday and learn more about what the center has in store. (hh)

The Senior Center has been transformed! I hope the senior embrace it as well as the whole community. Change is difficult for some. This is a good change!

It’s all fluff to cover the fact that the current people in charge of Park and Recs staff hate our elders. They took away the pool tables, took away the carpet, added a stupid logo, and for what? Snot nosed kids that will ruin our space for seniors.
