Having been away for a week, I took the bike back to the Albany Waterfront Project on Friday. As I had expected, my usual point of access to the Dave Clark Riverfront Path had been torn up.
The railroad crossing for pedestrians and bike riders under the Ellsworth Street Bridge is gone. In its place, contract crews have started building a new crossing just east of the Lyon Street Bridge.
These and other crossing changes along Water Avenue are part of the $21.5 million project to rebuild Albany’s downtown waterfront from Monteith Riverpark east.
Contractors for the city and the Portland & Western Railroad are making progress, as you would expect, which is noticeable especially if you come back to the riverfront after being out of town for a few days. (hh)
I have to agree that there needed to be a new pedestrian crossing in a better location than the one under the Ellsworth bridge. I work downtown occasionally and driving down Water avenue headed West, more than once I’ve had pedestrians, dogs and bicycles “pop” out from behind that pillar. It was definitely not the safest place for people to cross.
Lord help us. If those dainty toed pedestrians can’t cross RR tracks w/o a plush crossing. My gawd, the citizens of Albany have been doing it for the last 100 years with out any crossings. Does the City have any injury stats to back up the need?? These same manby pamby’s are gonna want a golden path to heaven also!!
There are some folks who have trouble walking, as well as those in wheelchairs, so you may want to stop and think about them for a moment instead of just generalizing everyone as a “mamby pamby”.
Oh and FYI, its spelled Namby pamby.
