Much of the interior of Albany’s Bryant Park was under water on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024.
It would not be winter if Bryant Park in Albany didn’t get flooded for at least a few days, sometimes for weeks.
In the park at the confluence of the Calapooia and Willamette rivers, the annual flooding arrived on schedule.
And even tbough the flooding of the park is routine, people came to look and take photos on Saturday afternoon. On a bike ride, I did the same thing.
The Willamette was at 17.69 feet on the Albany gauge at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. That’s well below the 25-foot “minor flood” stage.
The National Weather Service forecast called for the river to crest at 18.6 feet by New Year’s Eve.

Ducks navigate across Bryant Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Albany Parks and Recreation Department had closed the lower loop road in Bryant Park about a week ago. Now the park gates are closed as well. Bryant will remain closed to vehicles until the water goes down.
On Saturday the bike took me downstream to Bowman Park. As usual at this river level, access to the parking lot remained open, but the boat ramp was under water and the floating dock was out of reach.
All of this is typical along the Albany riverfront this time of year. It’s up to the weather how long the gates at Bryant Park will remain shut. (hh)

And here’s a look at Bowman Park, where high water put the floating dock out of reach.
