Behold the light in the middle of the lake

Written December 19th, 2024 by Hasso Hering

Waverly Lake at night: Pacific Boulevard is on the left, Salem Avenue on the right.

On the third of December I reported that the new fountain in Albany’s Waverly Lake might soon be lighted in color again. Tonight I finally thought to confirm that that’s the case.

These photos don’t show it, but in contrast to the glaring brightness of Pacific Boulevard on the south side, there’s nothing as dark as Waverly Park on an evening in December. Even when it’s only a little after 5 p.m.

The fountain was installed, along with several aerators, to try to control algae growth during the summer and fall. For a while there, the installation’s ability to change colors was knocked out by a power failure.

But that’s been fixed.

Drivers on the adjacent roads, Pacific Boulevard on one side and Salem Avenue on the other, are too busy keeping an eye on traffic to take a look through their side windows. So they’re not likely to see the lighted fountain in the distance.

But if you pull into the small parking lot near the corner of Pacific and Albany Avenue, as I did, you can take a short walk for a better look.

If you do that, bring a flashlight because there is no lighting on the walkways in the park. ((hh)

That is truly a lovely sight!
I appreciate the heads-up on the fact that there is no lighting on the pathway
    around the lake…..good to know.
I do appreciate your efforts to keep us informed as to what is going on around
    our community.

Hey Hasso. I don’t know how else to send you news tips, but it looks like somethings going on at the old St. Francis Hotel on First and Ferry?

Loving our Waverly Lake Lit Fountain! We are sooooooo Las Vegas now!
Yes, Lepman’s crew are busy on the former City Hall – I saw a painter up on the 3rd floor painting a window sill. And, his project on First seems to be moving along – so nice to see original buildings repurposed into living spaces.

    Merry Christmas Hasso!

I really enjoy your articles and pictures of what’s happening around Albany. You provide a true public service by keeping us informed of things we might otherwise be unaware of. I had no idea the fountain at Waverly Lake lights up at night. It’s rather nice. Keep up the great job!
