Waverly Lake at night: Pacific Boulevard is on the left, Salem Avenue on the right.
On the third of December I reported that the new fountain in Albany’s Waverly Lake might soon be lighted in color again. Tonight I finally thought to confirm that that’s the case.
These photos don’t show it, but in contrast to the glaring brightness of Pacific Boulevard on the south side, there’s nothing as dark as Waverly Park on an evening in December. Even when it’s only a little after 5 p.m.
The fountain was installed, along with several aerators, to try to control algae growth during the summer and fall. For a while there, the installation’s ability to change colors was knocked out by a power failure.
But that’s been fixed.
Drivers on the adjacent roads, Pacific Boulevard on one side and Salem Avenue on the other, are too busy keeping an eye on traffic to take a look through their side windows. So they’re not likely to see the lighted fountain in the distance.
But if you pull into the small parking lot near the corner of Pacific and Albany Avenue, as I did, you can take a short walk for a better look.
If you do that, bring a flashlight because there is no lighting on the walkways in the park. ((hh)
Zooming in on the lighted fountain in the middle of Waverly Lake on the evening of Dec. 19, 2024.
Behold the light in the middle of the lake
