Intended or not, the steel post at the Burkhart crossing is handy for bike storage when waiting for a train to move.
It’s rare that the Burkhart Street bike and pedestrian railroad crossing in Albany is blocked by a stationary train, but on Wednesday afternoon it was.
It was not a long wait. I used the time of standing there to record the scene:
I could not find out why this freight train was stopped there, blocking not just this little crossing but traffic on busy Salem Avenue as well.
Contrary to what I speculated about in the video, I did not see any sign of work on the track or a crossing when I went that way a few minutes later.
The Burkhart Street crossing may not get a lot of use, but for residents in this east-end Albany neighborhood, between the tracks and the Willamette River, it’s a handy shortcut. As long as they walk or ride a bike.
It’s also a good spot to get a close look at passing trains, several times a day. (hh)
