As pieces of Albany’s Waterfront Project are slowly coming together, it’s tempting to get a closer look even though they aren’t officially finished or complete.
So it is with the two viewing platforms or piers on the Willamette River.
There’s no access to the western one, the remnant of what once was an actual dock for riverboats. It is still behind the fence that surrounds Monteith Riverpark and keeps people out while work in the park continues.
But the eastern one, at the Avery Mill building, is accessible even though the area in front of it is still under construction and that section of the Dave Clark Path remains torn up.
When I parked the bike and walked out on the new pier Monday, an angler was sitting in a lawn chair on the platform at the end. He had two lines in the river below.
The Waterfront Project design calls this pier “Albany Landing” even though there’s no actual landing, just the viewing platform.
The space in front is designated Albany Square Plaza in the final design. The railroad crossing leading to it is one of those being improved as part of the overall project.
It’s one month before Monteith Riverpark is scheduled to reopen for the Fourth of July. Whether Albany Square Plaza will also be finished by then, we’ll just have to wait and see. (hh)
Always a great view from there.
I think Albany Landing is a name from Albany’s historical past when many types of boats did ply the river. So, Hasso, is it still in the Waterfront plan that none of the boardwalk, which is part of Dave Clark Path, near that area, will be repaired or replaced?
I’m so ready to have my jogging path back.
Thanks for the update and pics – this is one of my fav places to bring company while in downtown Albany.
