Once again on Saturday, as sometimes happens, an aimless bike ride around Albany brought me to a place I had never been.
This was a spot on Cox Creek just below the low-head dam or weir that forms the Swan Lakes. Here’s the video report:
I wrote about this little dam once before, in May 2019, but that time I had looked at it from above, from a paved path that runs from Pacific Boulevard past the Costco parking lot and opens on to the cul de sac that is Bain Street.
Here’s a link to that story, where I tried to explain “how Albany got the Swan Lakes.”
This time, on Saturday, I ended up on the other side of the creek and below the dam.
To get there, I crossed under Pacific Boulevard in the tunnel from Waverly Lake and then, instead of following the new pavement of the curving path back up to the highway, I took a short gravel path toward the dam.
This access point was opened up by the construction earlier this year of one leg of a new sewer interceptor. When finished two or three years frow now, this big sewer pipe will connect to the fast growing part of Albany east of Interstate 5.
By the way, in the video I missed getting a shot of the fish the boys had just caught in the creek there. But I saw it. It was big. (hh)
If they were fly fishing, I have watched the video from their Grandpa. :-)
Nice fly fishing kit that lad was toting there. Thank you.
Linking the video to Collin McCandless, Executive Director of the Calapooia Watershed Council and he might provide more background on Cox Creek, for another time.
Let’s see if he’s as forthcoming as ODOT.
Merry Christmas,
Scott
That’s No Boat Launch
I want that view, Hasso.
Love the warning sign behind you. Cameras!
Merry Christmas!
Another delightful moment in Albany! Thank you, Hasso for being out there for us!
Using Google Street View to look from the South side, I noticed a sign on the fence saying it was a private lake. violators will be…..
I wonder how much property tax one pays on a private, keep out, lake?
During the week of thanksgiving ,there was a very large log sittin just at the top of the dam.
During the heavy rains we just reciently had, now that log in almost in wavery lake.
pretty darn neat
