City’s appeal: Stay off Queen to let crews finish

Written August 28th, 2023 by Hasso Hering

Looking east on Queen Avenue from the Elm Street intersection on Aug.21, 2023.

If you want Queen Avenue to be finished on time, stay out of the way. That’s the advice that came Monday from the City of Albany.

City spokesman  Matt Harrington put out a statement on Monday morning.

“The Albany community can help project contractors reopen Queen Avenue to through traffic by Friday, Sept. 1, by staying out of the construction zone,” the statement began. “Paving and striping work will be completed this week, weather permitting, starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, August 29.”

The rest of the city’s appeal::
“It is very important during this phase of the project for those who do not live in the construction zone to stay out of the area. Unnecessary traffic during this time could delay reopening.
“Residents have already been notified by project contractor K&E that they will have access to their homes, but that access may be delayed to allow asphalt or striping to cure. K&E has encouraged all those living in the area to park off-site if they’re able to. Flaggers will be used to direct resident vehicles into the construction zone. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.
“The rest of the finish work will be completed with lane shifts or individual lane closures. Thank you for your patience as we work to complete the majority of work on this large project in just 11 weeks since school let out.”
K&E Excavating, the same company in charge of construction on the Albany Waterfront Project, also has the $6.2 million contract to rebuild Queen Avenue, basically from the Calapooia River bridge to Pacific Boulevard. Some work was also scheduled outside of that stretch.
If you want to reach businesses in the construction zone, such as Fay’s Cafe and others, you can park on side streets and go there on foot.
The city invited anyone with questions about the paving project to call Public Works Engineering at 541-917-7676.  But the main question now is whether the crews will be able to finish on time. (hh)
