A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

You’re advised: There’s smog in the air

Written August 14th, 2023 by Hasso Hering

A hazy sunset Monday, as seen from the Palestine area of North Albany.

As if we couldn’t tell by looking around on these very hot days, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality on Monday issued an “air quality advisory” for the south Willamette Valley because of smog and wildfire smoke.

The agency and the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency said the smog — ozone pollution –might last till early Thursday, but the smoke might clear out by Tuesday afternoon. Let’s hope.

The advisory covered Lane County and also included Albany, Corvallis and Lebanon.

Here’s part of the announcement: “Air quality agencies expect pollution to reach levels that could be unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, pregnant people, older adults, and people with heart disease or respiratory conditions. Health officials recommend that people limit outdoor activity when pollution levels are high.”

“Pregnant people”? Why can’t they say “pregnant women”?

As for limiting “outdoor activity when pollution levels are high,” that sounds like good advice. But it doesn’t mean you can’t jump on the bike for a few miles through the neighborhood once the heat of the day goes down but the sun is still up. (hh)

Your lungs and entire system would be better off if you would jump on the exercise bike indoors, Hasso, during these dangerous heat waves. But, you are stubborn, I would imagine.

““Pregnant people”? Why can’t they say “pregnant women”?”

Oh, Hasso, you know how to provoke Hartman, don’t you?

  3. Anony Mouse says:

Come on, Hasso, get with the times.

“Women”, “mother”, and “maternal” are not inclusive enough.

It won’t be long before uterus transplants can be done safely. Before the castration needed for the transplant someone who produces sperm can save the little swimmers. After the transplant they will be able to fertilize their own eggs and then give birth. (Please notice my use of appropriate pronouns.)

The Oregon DEQ is just following a progressive norm with their use of “pregnant people.” Welcome to the new world.

—“Pregnant people”? Why can’t they say “pregnant women”?—

Because the new wave of pregnant men might be offended? Hahahaha….

  5. Hartman says:

It is shocking and distressing that many of today’s comments are misguided and narrow. I speak specifically to the issue of “pregnant people.” Why is it that the Commenters are so offended by the term? Are these folks insecure in their own sexuality? They “doth protest too much,” seemingly to cover-up the haunting insecurities that torture their fragile egos. I haven’t read this much projection since 45 claimed his difficulties are a result of others forcing him to spend monies on lawyers. Given the obvious inadequacies vividly on display in today’s comments, we can only hope that at some point in the future these misguided souls will see the light. Hallelujah!

Exactly who was offended other than your alleged self? Why do you have to make stuff up? Your credibility continues to spiral down the toilet like a ….

      • Hartman says:

Your argument assumes facts not in evidence. I never claimed to have any credibility. I can only assume that you thought at one point in time that I had some increment of credibility. Otherwise you would not be pronouncing that the credibility gap is growing wider. Again, I never laid claim to credibility. Sorry to disappoint.

        Hartman….

        • Hartman says:

Careful. Your intellect is peaking through.

          • Cap B. says:

Hartman: Keep up the countering of Hasso’s posse of mostly old, white, Libertarian- nutcase followers. Your comments are well-written and frustrating, I’m sure, to their sputtering egos, thoughts, and gripes.

Omg! Only a woman can be pregnant! Get real! You are whats wrong with our world today!

  6. MarK says:

The fire off of North Albany Road right now isn’t helping

  7. Brandon Rodriguez says:

Pregnant people is an inclusive term to include people who don’t identify as women (ex. trans man) and can still get pregnant. I am not sure why people care if the language just becomes more inclusive.

    • Mac says:

Whatever they “identify” as does not change what they actually are. Pretty simple. Still a woman.

    • Dale says:

Men can not become pregnant! Not naturally anyway. Why would they want to? It is sad that society has attacked manhood so much, that men want to or feel the need to be something they are not. Soooo sad.

      • Brandon Rodriguez says:

Not sure how this affects either of you by just using a more inclusive term. Maybe try and focus that energy on worrying about something more useful for your time.

  8. CHEZZ says:

The heatwave beats us down, but the roses are in bloom!

  9. Cap B. says:

I’ve changed my mind. The term, pregnant people, is a welcome change. Could it mean that finally after centuries women are considered to be “people”? Let’s get cracking on getting that Women’s Rights Amendment we gave up on dusted off and ratified by all the 50 states!!!
