Wide streets, mature trees and a variety of single-family homes make the Willamette Neighborhood a nice place to live — or ride a bike.
You can stay cooped up because of Covid and go stir-crazy, or you can get out into the December air and move around. Albany’s neighborhoods lend themselves to the latter.
I try to demonstrate the point with the video below, taken on the afternoon of Dec. 4.
The Willamette Neighborhood on the east end of the city’s older residential section is great for getting out, on foot or on a bike.
Traffic ranges from zero to light. That’s most of the time. But the other amenities are there all the time.
Such as: Wide streets with sidewalks. Mature trees that make for good scenery even in winter. Many different housing styles and manners of living. This is a neighborhood of young and old, of working people and others who worked all their lives before old age caught up with them.
There’s a great variety of housing — from trailers that need work to old houses that have been nicely maintained or restored. Most of the dwellings are on large lots, giving the place an airy feeling.
We hear much in Oregon about the need for more “affordable housing.” Here you get the feeling that housing was affordable when the people moved in. And because the neighborhood is old, it may be affordable still.
Oregon officials including the governor and the majority of legislators from bigger cities want all Oregon towns to pack in more people. Because of all its qualities, let’s hope nothing comes along — including local policies bowing to legislative mandates –to screw this neighborhood up. (hh)

The Gov has ordered that masks be worn state wide “AT ALL TIMES”, except for a few situations. It appears you do not meet any of the exceptions.

CDC is also now recommending masks to be worn indoors – in your own home now too… Considering the # of “stupid is as stupid does” folks running around your solution is? (Bike riding on wide open streets with no one in sight is a very good thing to do…)
