I found this sign on the road to Talking Water Gardens on Wednesday afternoon.
You can get to the Talking Water Gardens this week, but you’ll have to park a little farther away.
On my bike ride Wednesday, I saw a “road closed” sign on Waverly Drive just before the Cox Creek bridge. Is somebody finally repairing the bridge, I wondered.
No such luck. Indeed, I saw no signs of work on the bridge, which has been restricted to one lane for years.
And the road itself was not actually closed. Employees of the the Portland & Western Railroad use it to get to and from the company’s Millersburg yard.
I got an explanation of the sign from Kristin Preston, manager of City of Albany Public Works operations.
“We have contractors filling/regrading the gravel parking lot at Talking Water Gardens/Simpson Park, and they need the lot to be empty to do the work,” she told me via email. “They should be done by Friday so we can open it back up for the weekend.”
Until then, there are a few parking spaces along the unimproved section of Waverly Drive on the Albany side of the bridge. (hh)
