Riverfront items: New access; park steps

Written May 18th, 2024 by Hasso Hering

You can now access the riverfront path at Montgomery Street.

And in other exciting news, the new crossing to the Dave Clark Riverfront Path at Montgomery Street in Albany has been opened for public use.

There was a guardrail at this point before the city’s Waterfront Project began. The guardrail kept anyone off the tracks or going across.

Now, though it’s not quite finished, this is one of two new points where people on foot or on bikes can get on or off the riverfront path. I noticed this on my usual Saturday ride.

The other new crossing, close to the Lyon Street Bridge, has been started but is not complete.

Also on the riverfront, Friday’s story about the shiny new concrete steps in Monteith Riverpark prompted Councilwoman Steph Newton and City Manager Peter Troedsson to point out that the steps aren’t the only way to move around the park.

There are newly constructed and gently sloped concrete walkways on both sides of the park, and these and other improvements will benefit people with mobility issues. I should have mentioned that when making fun of the new steps.

It will be interesting to see how those steps are used during concerts in the park.

The steps cut through part of the lawn where people used to sit and watch the stage. Now, will the steps be available for seating, or will they have to be kept clear?

We’ll see how it works when the park reopens in July. (hh)

From the new steps, you have a good view of the Monteith Riverpark stage.

Wasn’t there a ramp around that same location where the steps are now? Is there a reason why it’s now steps there??? At least it looks like there’s lighting, or I’m assuming that’s what that pole is in your photo.

OMG. This will help people in wheelchairs and have difficulty in walking . And that’s the new stage?? Really?
