November at Waverly Lake: No aerators yet

Written November 6th, 2023 by Hasso Hering

You’re looking across Waverly Lake toward Coffin Butte in the distance on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023.

Waverly Lake in Albany looked calm and mostly clear when I went past last Friday. I was looking for the aerators and fountain that were supposed to be installed after the lake was cleared of algae in August.

In a project for which the city council had approved $60,000, the Albany parks department last summer hired Aquatics Harvesting Inc. to clear the lake of weeds and algae and install 12 aerators plus a fountain to keep the water clear.

The cleanup was done in August, but the company had other commitments for similar jobs and could not complete the installation of the new equipment. The parks department said that was expected to be done in October.

“We are waiting on the contractor,” Rick Barnett of the parks department told me today. “He had to finish all of his weed removal contracts and then do the fountain. I talked to him about two weeks ago and expect to see him soon.”

Waverly Lake is on one of my bike-riding routes through Albany. It’s always worth a stop because it’s an unusually scenic spot right in the middle of town next to Pacific Boulevard (U.S. 99E), one of the busiest highways in town.

That’s why, on this website anyway, you’ve seen occasional shots of the lake, and will probably see more. (hh)
