This wild-eyed wooden beast was guarding a trail at Bowman Park on Feb. 6.
Riding around town on a bike means you see some stuff you might miss if you stayed put.
Take that wooden monster on a trail at Bowman Park, for instance. I came across it on Feb. 6.
I have an idea who made the thing but can’t be sure. The wood has been in a fire, obviously. The shoes are a nice touch.
What else did I see on short rides the last couple of days?
First, there was the beginning of the improved riverside path at The Banks, the new apartments near Bowman Park. The developer is paving the path along the frontage of the apartments’ lower parking lot.
The rest of the dirt path from there to Simpson Park will be left the way it is, which is unimproved and wild.

Then, on Wednesday, I looked down from the Dave Clark Riverfront Path near Edgewater Village and spotted a tent on the bank. Seems like a precarious place to make camp.
A couple days of heavy rain would make the Willamette rise and swamp this place.
Then, near the end of Wednesday’s 10-mile cruise along my riverfront beat, I looked down and noticed that the odometer on my bike computer was about to hit 10,000 miles.
This version has only four digits to the left of the decimal point. A few pedal strokes later it started over at 0.
I can’t remember exactly, but I think I put the computer on this bike four or five years ago. I’m hoping the computer, the bike — and I — will last long enough to reach this milestone again. (hh)
And so, in a matter of only a few seconds we are treated to a magazine of Art, Nature, Science, Sociology, the progress of Man, hope for the Future, and probably many other thoughtful topics. Thank you Hasso, for giving us a window on your life, and ours too.

Congratulations on the milestone! I got a pedometer when I retired in 2015 and even though I’ve slowed down the last couple of years, I just passed 7100 miles (over 15 and a half million steps).
Your bike journey of many miles somehow reminds me of the Kingston Trio song ‘500 miles’. Trains and journeying…
I’m surprised your battery lasted that long. Mine last about 2 years and a small fraction of your mileage.
