A new restaurant may be built on the former site of a gas station on the corner of Pacific Boulevard and Madison Street in Albany if the new owners go through with their plans.
The lot is at 902 Pacific Blvd. S.E., across Pacific from Pop’s Branding Iron, the restaurant.
For many years, under several ownerships from at least the 1960s into the 1980s, the property was the site of a Union 76 service station.
After the station was torn down, underground contamination was cleaned up. According to a note on Linn County tax records, by 2003 the state Department of Environmental Quality was satisfied that no further cleanup action was necessary.
Jason and Zhensheng Yu, of Salem, bought the vacant lot in May 2022 for $250,000, according to the online county records.
Last fall they applied for approval of a site plan for a new restaurant on the property. The restaurant was to have 2,448 square feet of interior space and a parking lot with 14 spaces. Access to the parking lot would be from Madison Street, across Madison from a cannabis store.
Alyssa Schrems, with the City of Albany Planning Division, told me Monday the owners had withdrawn their application in order to revise the site plan.
Because of a state mandate, she said, requirements for the minimum number of parking spaces were relaxed as of the first of the year. The applicants may modify their plans accordingly.
When a site plan is submitted for review, the city’s planning division notifies neighboring owners and posts a notice on its website. So, when a new plan is filed for 902 Pacific, we’ll have a better idea of what’s next for this lot on a busy street. (hh)

I heard last spring that Chick Fil-A bought the property, but i’m not sure if the plans fell through on that
I believe it was called “The Original Breakfast” west side of I-5 on Santiam hwy. Chick-Fil-A purchased the old the old McGrath’S Seafood site in Corvallis to build, I understand activists are trying to stop them due to their religious beliefs.

14 parking spaces…4 for employees leaves 10 for customers. No way that math works. Minimum wage will be more than 15 bucks an hour before they get open. If they have drive through, it’s a different story.

I believe the Mexican restaurant at Bain and Santiam is owned by Hacienda – there is one on Wallace Road in NW Salem. I checked the owner info.
