Land donation near Oak Creek Trail

Written August 16th, 2013 by

The Albany City Council has accepted the donation of more than 90 acres of undeveloped — and mostly unbuildable — land in the Oak Creek drainage of south Albany.

The donation gives the city acreage that links parcels already owned by the city along the creek, an important reach of open space in close proximity to subdivisions just north of 53d Avenue.

An occasionally rugged and sometimes muddy trail runs along Oak Creek in this area, a boon for walkers and joggers and even mountain bikers (in this case me). Enjoy it now, for in winter parts of it may be under water.

When the council talked about this at a work session Aug. 12, parks Director Ed Hodney made the point that all property taxes on the entire acreage being donated, for all jurisdictions, amounted to less than $1,000 a year.

The council accepted the gift on Aug. 14 after being assured by Hodney that it was extremely unlikely the land contained any hazardous material. A former city dump is in the general vicinity but not on any of the donated land. (hh)
