Listening, I hear nothing but silence on this sunny afternoon of Dec. 6, the second Advent Sunday.
Sunday was the kind of day you enjoy when you ride a bike for fun in the Willamette Valley: Sunny, mild for December and, out on Bryant Drive, absolutely still.
So if you want, click the video below and watch my shadow cover a short distance on that road. (I’m out there often. It’s part of the route that Linn County did me the honor of designating as a scenic bikeway a few years back, with my name attached to it.)
Outings like this in good weather help keep some of us from despairing over the cascade of bad news –mainly the continued large number of corona cases here and around the world — raining down on us this Christmas season. (Sunday was the second Sunday of Advent, in case you forgot.)
And then, after an outing during the day, you can get a dose of the holiday spirit by taking a quick look the community Christmas tree in downtown Albany after dark.
The lights on the downtown tree make a valiant effort to compete with the street lights on Second.
What is there to do downtown after dark? Helping small business survive the state’s corona restrictions, that’s what. You can do that by picking up a take-out meal or two at the Taqueria Alonzo and any other place that’s open at night. (hh)

Do you know what is happening with the property at 222 1st Street? It has been under “repair/re-doing” for a very long time. Maybe you’ve reported on it and I missed it.
The Lepmans are remodeling the former Spruce apartments at 222 First Ave. S.E. as 18 new units to be known as the Opera House Apartments. In September, the Albany urban renewal agency approved an interest rate subsidy of about $105,000 to help with the project.
