A double take at the sight of this sign at this site

Written July 5th, 2020 by Hasso Hering

2:35 p.m. Sunday, July 5, Salem Avenue, just east of Sherman, looking west.

Thanks for the advance notice, but then perhaps this is a bit too far in advance?

This sign on Albany’s Salem Avenue barely registered with me when I rode past it on Sunday afternoon. But then: “Wait a minute. What walking path? And why should it be closed?”

So I circled back for a second look. Aha! A prank, obviously. Or more likely, a theft from the street department in Corvallis.

Whoever took the thing and set it up on Salem Avenue, let me suggest you put it back in your truck and return it to wherever you swiped it in Corvallis.

Do it before a bunch of people are caught unaware of this path closure, which may force them into a detour they did not expect and do not want. Especially if their feet are already sore. (hh)

That path has been open again for many months, but it’s just a wide sidewalk now, with a remaining, isolated little piece of the old path through wetland near Harrison.

A different official sign during construction was so absurd that it seemed like a prank. It suggested a miles-long, 100-feet-or-more uphill, completely pointless walk/bike detour to go downtown from the Harrison end of the path.

My guess is the contractor was trying to save a buck by reusing a sign that makes no sense, maybe even planning to modify the sign with a placard over circle and Harrison. I suppose it is possible someone stole it and is pulling a prank but contractors are always trying to save a buck by reusing signs or trying to get away with substandard signs.
