A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

Watching Coast Starlight leave the station

Written November 1st, 2025 by Hasso Hering

The southbound Coast Starlight is about to take off from Albany Station on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025.

On Saturday afternoon, I was cruising through the parking lot of Albany Station when the Amtrak’s Coast Starlight just happened to pull into the station.

So naturally, I had to jump off the bike and watch the train take off again:

This is obviously not an unusual sight. Amtrak 11, the number of this train, comes through every afternoon. It is one of six passenger trains a day that stop in Albany.

Last week, Train 11 had an unfortunate incident — and a delay of several hours — when a young man walked in front of it and was killed at the Queen Avenue crossing just south of the station.

I think you can tell from today’s video that the train is not going very fast when it pulls out after its Albany stop. And even from here at the station, you can hear the warning blasts as the train nears the crossing at Queen. (hh)

Thanks, Hasso. Nice video as usual. I’m watching the 11th inning of the tied game 7 (last game) of the World Series.
