This is the middle of a southbound manifest as it passes the Burkhart Street bike and pedestrian crossing on Aug. 17, 2026.
Every once in a while there has to be a train video on this blog for no reason other than I like trains.
This one came about on Monday, Aug. 17, at the Burkhart Street crossing of the Union Pacific mainline in Albany.
Why doesn’t this video start with the locomotives, which would be the normal method of showing a freight train blasting through town?
Because I had just gone over the track on my bike, and by the time I heard the customary horn of the approaching train, I was too far across, had to turn around and could not get back in time.
The southbound train was a moderately long manifest, called that because it consisted of a variety of freight.
This place, on Burkhart Street, is a useful crossing in that it allows people on foot and on bikes to get across the tracks without having to make a big detour, either to Davidson Street on one side or Geary Street on the other.
It’s also a good place to see passing trains up close. If, that is, you get there in time. (hh)

I grew up 150 feet from the mainline in Shedd. Your train stories and videos never get old, Hasso. Well, I can think of at least one old curmudgeon on here who will probably complain that this story isn’t worthy.

I noticed the heroic efforts at painting over the disgusting graffiti on many of the cars. For once I could enjoy the view along with the pleasure of revenge over those creeps. Thank you, Hasso.
