The sad condition of Albany’s Waverly Lake caught the attention of the mayor and city council this week, if only for a minute.
Well, I stopped at Waverly Lake on Tuesday evening, wondering if there had been any change in the infestation of algae or some kind of water weed.
A visitor to Waverly Park alerted me Monday that people were raking off the unsightly algae, the subject of a couple of stories on this site. I got on the bike to take a look.
Heat may not be the only thing interfering with the summertime paddle boat rentals the Albany Parks and Recreation Department normally runs on Waverly Lake.
Like every summer in recent years, Albany’s Waverly Lake is now covered by a growing mass of algae on the surface of the pond. In the fall the algae will die and disappear, and by winter they’ll be gone.
It was just a month ago that Waverly Lake in Albany was covered — much of it anyway — with thick mats of algae or maybe something else like duckweed. On Wednesday, Oct. 13, almost all of that unsightly growth had disappeared.
A plan to keep Waverly Lake clear
Albany’s Waverly Lake may stay clear of algae next summer if the city council grants a request from the city parks department for funds to bring that about.
