Here’s a first look at one of the long-awaited pieces of public art the city of Albany will install at the Lyon Street entrance to downtown.
The Albany City Council has a dilemma concerning “public art.” It was unable to resolve this problem Monday and will try again when it meets at 7:15 Wednesday night. If the issue is not resolved soon, it may hold up the design of the city’s new police headquarters and main fire station.
What is art, exactly? It’s an old question, and it’s coming up before the Albany City Council. An Albany ordinance provides that 1 percent of the cost of new city buildings be spent on art. So what about the planned new police department and downtown fire station, which together might cost around $24 million?

One of the selling points — to me anyway — of Albany’s public art project was that its colorful lights would brighten our winter nights. But on Friday evening, they were hard to see from more than a few feet away.
