Oregon’s low-key experiment with charging road users by the mile continues, and on Monday the fee goes up in order to keep up with the jump in the state gas tax.

Truck speed change approved

Will raising the speed limit for trucks make a difference on Oregon freeways? We’ll find out as soon as ODOT gets around to completing the paperwork and installing new signs.


Trouble spot on 20 waits for a fix

This is where Independence Highway runs into U.S. 20, the Albany Corvallis Highway. It’s a tricky place for making left turns on to 20, toward Albany, as one of these trucks is waiting to do.

Getting stuck behind one slow 18-wheeler passing another on the freeway made me wonder whatever happened to this year’s proposal to raise the speed limit for trucks. We’ll get the answer to that question in a couple of months.


Truck stop work: Not yet, but soon

It takes a while to get legions of ODOT officials to sign off on the details of work on the highway system, which explains why nothing has yet happened on construction of a Love’s truck stop in Millersburg. But the wait is due to end next month.


More bulbouts, and a question

The official name, I think, is sidewalk extensions. But you can also call them bulbouts. They’ve been a favorite of street planners for years, and Albany is getting a bunch more as part of the CARA streetscape project that’s going to start in June.


Road-user-fee bill stalls in Salem

Legislators seem to be in no hurry to expand OReGO, the state’s per-mile road tax program, or to make it mandatory in a few years. A bill to do both was heard by the House transportation committee on March 15 but has seen no action since.
