Red tape unwound: The shed can go

The shed you see here may be leveled and replaced with a 528-square-foot garage, the Albany Landmarks Advisory Commission voted Wednesday. But it took two public hearings and a month’s delay to reach that conclusion.

Making new house fit old neighborhood

A ride this week took me down Fourth Avenue in Albany’s Hackleman Historic District, and I stopped to photograph a newly built house that looked close to being completed. I was struck by how nicely it fits in with the older houses on the street.

Why these old houses can’t be saved

Members of the Albany Landmarks Advisory Commission owe it to themselves to tour three derelict houses at Calapooia Street and Fourth Avenue before they decide on their owners’ request to demolish the structures.

Making this place livable again

This old house near the entrance to Albany’s Bryant Park is in pretty poor shape. Now the owners of the triplex rental plan to fix it up, get rid of some unauthorized alterations, and restore it as much as possible to the way it may have looked after it was built more than a century ago.
