So what have we learned from the protest and occupation at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Harney County? Among other things, the government is determined to go after people whose objections to federal authority go beyond accepted conventions. It wants to make an example.

Good change: Letting the public see

The FBI on Thursday told us what happened when several of the Malheur refuge protesters were arrested and one was killed. It demonstrated that informing the public is the right thing to do, and that it can be done in a timely manner even while a formal investigation is still going on.


And now, the loss of a life

We have to wait to find out exactly what happened, but so far the terse FBI announcement leaves a bad taste about the arrests of some of the protesters in Harney County and the killing of one of them.
