Sooner or later, I thought while riding my riverfront beat on Saturday, efforts to revive Albany’s riverfront will have to deal with the question of how to attract more customers, residents, visitors and even home buyers to a place where the homeless often hang out.
As far as at-grade railroad crossings go, the one on Albany’s Northeast Columbus Street wasn’t exactly a busy one. Now it’s even less busy because the street has been closed where it crosses the track.
After checking out the interior of the first units in Edgewater Village over the weekend, I’m encouraged about the prospects of this, Albany’s biggest investment yet in reviving a blighted part of the old downtown.
For someone who has been following the long history of this Albany site on the Willamette River, as I have, this weekend marks another milestone. The first five houses of Edgewater Village are finished, beating a deadline, and the public gets a look at them Saturday.
It’s encouraging to see the first houses going up in Edgewater Village, the planned development sandwiched between Albany’s Water Avenue and the Willamette River. It signals the continuing transformation of an old part of Albany that had been a wasteland for some time even before the former packing plant on this site burned in 2006.

At Edgewater Village, a plan change
The market is forcing a change in the plans for Edgewater Village, the most ambitious of all the downtown development projects supported by CARA, the Central Albany Revitalization Area.
