Rail bridge reaches its century mark

Watching a freight train crossing the river on the “Toledo District Willamette Bridge” on Tuesday made me realize something: This is a big anniversary year for that steel structure spanning the river at Albany. It was built 100 years ago, in 1921.

Sewer project has first real test: It works!

In case you missed it, unlikely as that is, last weekend we had our first episode of heavy rain this winter. And guess what: Albany’s Riverfront Interceptor, a big sewer main that drains most of the central part of town, did NOT overflow.

Once again Albany’s Dave Clark Riverfront Path has been temporarily blocked by sewer work. It’s an interesting project marked by geyser-like eruptions of — steam!

For years, three or four times a week, I have passed this concrete ruin by the side of Albany’s Dave Clark Riverfront Path without thinking anything about it. The other day I finally wondered what it was a ruin of.

See how clear of vines this path is now

As I say above, today I found the Dave Clark Path on Albany’s Willamette Riverfront cleared of the blackberry bushes and thorny vines that threatened to snag walkers and bike riders the last few weeks.
