Seeing the clock tower at Albany Station on a bike ride Wednesday reminded me of a time issue that remains unresolved in Oregon because the legislature passed up a chance to fix it.

Next House speaker, an Albany lawyer

There’s something happening in Oregon politics that has happened only once before, 146 years ago. When the 2022 legislature convenes on Feb. 1, an Albany lawyer will become speaker of the House.

Democrats to enlarge voter rolls

It’s no surprise that Democrats in the legislature are about to enact a bill intended to vastly increase the number of voters likely to vote Democratic. The upshot is that Oregon’s one-party government will become even more firmly entrenched in the years to come.

Mid-valley legislators want all kinds of law changes this session, ranging from big ones like the low-carbon fuel standard to less expensive items, such as letting Interstate 5 be known as the “Purple Heart Trail.”
