A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

“In Winter’s Grip II”

Written February 7th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Another day, another stroll in the snow, deeper now than the day before. Such is our fate as climate change utterly fails to make itself felt. This is the kind of winter we had several times in the 1970s and ’80s, if memory serves.  (hh)

The Blizzard of ’14

Written February 7th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

This winter storm may not become a routine event in western Oregon (we hope). Still, it is a useful reminder of what nature can do, and if we were not fully prepared this time, maybe we’ll do better from now on, or at least as long as we remember the Blizzard of 2014.

Obama and his climate hubs

‘Top climate expert’ faces prison

Written December 16th, 2013 by Hasso Hering

Well, speaking of climate change, one of the federal government’s policy experts on the subject turns out to have been a crook. He is John C. Beale, 65, who is scheduled to be sentenced in Washington Wednesday after pleading guilty to defrauding the government by drawing almost $1 million in pay and benefits while doing no […]

Coast update: Sea level?

Written December 16th, 2013 by Hasso Hering

Just in case you were wondering what was happening at the central Oregon coast, here’s a video update, shaky and wind-noisy it may be. The short answer is that nothing has changed since the last update a month or so ago. Except that on Dec. 16 the weather was sunny and mild, very nice. The main […]
