Bailey Branch objections answered

Written July 10th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Some Benton County farmers and others have all kinds of reasons to oppose turning the old Bailey Branch rail line into a trail for hikers and bicycle riders, but the objections raised at a hearing Thursday all have answers.

How to use Benton’s Bailey Line

Written July 1st, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Benton County says most of the suggestions it has received so far about what to do with the old Bailey Branch railroad line can be arranged into five options. To my mind, the only ones that don’t make sense are to break up and sell off segments or to do nothing with the corridor until […]

Corvallis-Albany trail may get $2 million

Written June 12th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Good news on the cycling front — I think. The long-planned Corvallis-Albany bike trail may soon get $2 million of the roughly $4.8 million it is estimated to cost. The project ended up 18th on a statewide priority list of funding under the program known as Connect Oregon V (that’s V as in 5).

No surprise: Property taxes rise

Written October 9th, 2013 by

Guess what, property tax totals in two mid-valley counties are up again this year. This is no surprise. Voters in Albany approved a slight bump in the special levy for public safety. New construction has taken place, and in many cases the assessed value of property went up regardless of what the market did because […]

Gee, it’s just a road sign!

Written July 29th, 2013 by

12 percent interest? Believe it!

Written July 9th, 2013 by

There are at least three things that are surprising about the Hewlett-Packard property tax case. You may be aware that in the Oregon Tax Court in May, HP won an appeal of its property tax assessment for the years 2008, 2009 and 2010. The first surprise was how far off the state Revenue Department had […]
