If you want a change of pace and something far less momentous than Jihadi terror to worry about, how about calling Albany streets by their correct names? Spring Hill Road comes to mind. It’s three words, as the road sign on the Albany-Corvallis Highway makes plain.
Consultants on Wednesday showered Albany’s urban renewal board with ideas for millions of dollars in downtown street enhancements, but they recommended against angled parking on Second Avenue.
Albany’s downtown streets might get a facelift over the next few years. Or they might not, depending on what the Central Albany Revitalization Area advisory board thinks of design options worked up the Portland firm of George Crandall, CARA’s architectural adviser.
If you were hoping that the potholed streets in the older parts of Albany might some day be repaved, you can expect to be disappointed. The city government has no plans to do anything about this worsening problem, at least not yet.
East-west ‘avenues’ — but why?
The world faces many pressing issues, and this is about none of them. Instead, it’s about the nagging and so far unanswered question of why some of Albany’s city streets including all the numbered ones are designated “avenues” while others are simply “streets.”
