Periwinkle’s nutrias: There are fewer now

Written November 13th, 2018 by Hasso Hering

If nutrias are hard to spot now in Periwinkle Creek, it’s probably because a contractor for the Albany Parks Department got rid of about 40 of the pesky rodents a couple of months ago.

City to dispose of N. Albany pond

Written November 9th, 2018 by Hasso Hering

The Albany Parks Department has no use for a little pond the city owns next door to a planned North Albany apartment project and would like to dispose of it. Go ahead and get that process started, the city council said this week.

Albany parks, a playground for turkeys

Written September 26th, 2018 by Hasso Hering

On the Eagle Trail: A hiker’s thanks

Written August 2nd, 2018 by Hasso Hering

[youtube video=”AwaGOLbQtb0″] Helen McGovern’s walking group took a hike down the Eagle Trail from Albany’s Takena Landing Park last week. Then she sent me a note: “Thanks to whoever cleaned up the trail. It was a pleasure to do the hike.” I went to see for myself, and she’s right. The trail is in great shape.

Coming back to Sunrise Park: Here’s why

Written July 21st, 2018 by Hasso Hering

Albany’s Sunrise Park is interesting for at least two reasons. First, it’s being renovated specifically to help the surrounding neighborhood, one of Albany’s poorest. And second, the process of getting it done illustrates the insanity of state and federal rules on “wetlands.”

Cleaned up for now; surveillance next?

Written May 17th, 2018 by Hasso Hering

This was the Cox Creek Path railroad underpass on Thursday afternoon, and as you can see, the walls have once again been repainted to look clean. This spot on the Albany park system is tagged so often that I think it would be a promising candidate for camera surveillance.

Riverfront news: Takena’s dock is ready

Written May 3rd, 2018 by Hasso Hering

[youtube video=”hJqg7v71K-c”] It took some hard work by the Albany parks crew, but now the new floating dock at Takena Landing on the Willamette River is in the water, ready to be used.
