A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

This rosy glow grabs my attention

Written February 22nd, 2016 by Hasso Hering

It was last Aug. 21 when I wrote about this restaurant, which had been vacant and closed for so long that a reader had asked me what was going on. The owner, Ed Wright, told me he hoped to open it soon. Then, on Monday, back in town after a week away, I’m driving around […]

Albany police and fire levy: May vote

Written February 10th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

Albany voters get a chance in May to renew the city’s police and fire tax levy a year early, and if they do, about $80,000 of the first year’s amount will not be siphoned off for urban renewal.

Rain tax … uh … fee is coming

Written February 8th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

It’s a contraction that describes a pavement marking, kind of an “arrow” or chevron, that calls on motorists to “share” the road with bicyclists. Today’s question is whether sharrows should be painted on Albany’s Ellsworth and Lyon streets and on the Ellsworth Street bridge.

Rift averted; pot ban passes

Written December 7th, 2015 by Hasso Hering

Albany is banning recreational marijuana sales after all, for a year anyway. And Councilman Bill Coburn Monday rescued fellow Councilor Ray Kopczynski from causing what might have been lingering bitterness on the council over how the marijuana issue fared.
