Council ‘guest’ process draws ire

Written October 25th, 2017 by Hasso Hering

Scott Pierson sat in on Wednesday’s Albany City Council meeting as a nonvoting guest, and the way he was selected drew objections from a new political action committee that intends to work for city council change.

Albany mayor: Down with weeds!

Written June 16th, 2017 by Hasso Hering

The trouble with springtime, as we all know, is weeds. And trying to keep weeds from growing is a battle that cannot be won. But the Albany mayor would like somebody at least to try where city streets are concerned.

Jim Clausen, a full life remembered

Written January 27th, 2017 by Hasso Hering

Jim Clausen used to give me a hard time, pouncing on editorial remarks on this site as insufficiently conservative, harmful to liberty, or just plain wrong. Some of his views were over the top, but his heart was in the right place, and I’m sorry that he’s gone.

Expect action on Albany bikeway

Written January 22nd, 2017 by Hasso Hering

Written January 9th, 2017 by Hasso Hering

That old church: Still waiting

Written December 22nd, 2016 by Hasso Hering

Passing by the former Cumberland Presbyterian Church the other day, I wondered if there had been any progress on finding someone to take the old place off the Albany city government’s hands. The answer is no, not much has happened since the city council last dealt with the issue four months ago.

Albany pot: Looking for ‘reasonable’

Written December 5th, 2016 by Hasso Hering

Albany’s city charter requires four votes on the city council for any action. Twice now, the second time on Monday, Councilman Dick Olsen has made himself scarce, preventing the enactment of severe restrictions on the possible location of recreational marijuana businesses, limits that he opposes. The deadlock may continue until the council finds a reasonable way out.
