Speech control in the name of preventing electioneering by public employees. That’s the issue in the latest dispute over statements by public employees, and this time it involved Albany. The city council on Monday had a chance to be tough about it, but it chose a softer route.

If you’ve always wanted to spend tons of money on acquiring and restoring an old church, here’s your chance. The city of Albany plans to invite proposals along those lines for a building at Santiam Road and Main Street, which the city bought for a road project but now doesn’t need after all.


Albany backs off marijuana-store ban

Whatever happens with medical-marijuana dispensaries in Oregon, Albany won’t be in the forefront of trying to keep them out, at least for now. The city council Monday voted 4-2 to withdraw its application to change the city development code to prevent marijuana stores from getting started.

Planning panel opposes pot amendment

The city council’s attempt to keep medical marijuana dispensaries out of Albany once state rules allowing them take effect in March may have hit a bump. On Monday night, the city planning commission recommended against a proposed change in the city development code intended to ban dispensaries but seemingly banning all pot.
