HASSO HERING

A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

Stepping into the coming year, slowly

Written January 3rd, 2026 by Hasso Hering

With my feet on the ground, I’m preparing to step into another year.

Things might be wild on the international scene, but New Year’s week on the local front it usually dead.

Now is no exception, so what does one do? One option is taking a little walk:

Let’s hope things will pick up when people get back to work on Jan. 5. (hh)

Taking a walk. That is what I do in my Oregon. ( born here 77 years ago on the coast). Taking a walk kinda makes the turbulence of the world go away for awhile. I have to say, Oregon is not the same as when I grew up here. Some readers on this blog may not understand what I am saying, Some will. Have a good day, Greg.

I know what you mean. I was born in Oregon more years ago than you, Greg…

Hasso, thanks for the walk and talk!! Wasn’t Big Lots store at one time in the line of stores where Safeway now is?

Nobody noticed the beautiful neighborhood with all the gorgeous trees. I don’t know why anybody would prefer living elsewhere. Good show for the new year!

    My dear Hasso:
I’ve enjoyed many years of your commentaries; from the newspaper days to your more recent updates on local situations. Thank you for your “ride-abouts”.
