Steady progress on new Cox Creek bridge

Written September 14th, 2026 by Hasso Hering

Sparks fly Monday as work continues on the southside abutment of the new bridge on Cox Creek.

There’s nothing much to see on the Cox Creek bridge replacement project on Waverly Drive, just the signs of slow and steady progress as work continues into the fall.

As I occasionally do, I went by there on Monday and snapped a couple of photos. You see them here.

The contractor, Legacy Contracting of Stayton, has about two months (until Nov. 20) before the new single-span, two-lane bridge complete with sidewalk and bike lane is supposed to be complete.

The crew has removed the eastern lane and the wooden pilings that were holding it up. The east lane had been closed since 2005 because of concern about the strength of the substructure. The bridge was built in 1957.

When that lane is ready for traffic, the contractor will replace the other lane.

The bridge is on the boundary between Albany and Millersburg. Linn County is administering the $2.4 million contract funded mainly by the state’s small-bridge replacement program.

Getting the bridge fixed was important because it’s he only way vehicles can get to Simpson Park, the Talking Water Gardens, and the Millersburg yard of the Portland & Western Railroad. (hh)

This perspective gave me a good view Monday of how the bridge abutments and wing walls are being constructed of concrete and steel.

This will be nice when done…..money well spent on this one……

The bridge is on one of your favorite bike ride routes is the reason, me thinks, that you report on it so often. Do rail yard workers use that bridge to get to their jobs at the Millersburg Rail Yard? Do people (besides you) use that bridge to use the trail that goes by all the homeless encampments next to the trail since Simpson homeless park was cleared out?

What’s your point? Do you think they’re fixing it just for Hasso? It’s needed repaired for over 20 years and is finally getting done.

Great, great! Good for you. I’m, of course, not saying they re-did the bridge for Hasso. You are looking for a fight; and I’m not; so you will have to find your fight elsewhere.
