At the Pine Street crossing Thursday, a wave from the engineer.
On a bike ride through Albany’s Willamette Neighborhood on Thursday evening, I got to the Pine Street crossing about the same time as a Portland & Western train.
Just a few cars, as you saw. And as I confessed on the video, I didn’t know if this particular train had a name or where it was going.
So I’m grateful for a commenter who wrote on YouTube: “It’s otherwise known as the Santiam Lead and the train was a transfer from the OE yard to the UP yard.”
That would be the Millersburg and Albany rail yards, respectively.
The yards are roughly one mile apart. So this was a short trip for a short train.
Near this pedestrian and bike crossing on Pine Street, there’s a manufactured home that had been condemned by the city for code violations and sold by the sheriff in 2025.
The buyer, from Eugene, told me at the time he intended to fix it up. On Thursday it looked like someone had been doing some work.
But the city’s online records don’t show any building permits, so maybe the buyer’s intentions have not yet worked out. (hh)
That’s the new Albany affordable housing that builder was talking about….a little train noise won’t hurt the sale…..much…oh my choo-choo..
