A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

On a dirt trail close to — actually in — town

Written March 12th, 2021 by Hasso Hering

The entrance to the Simpson Park trails. One goes upriver to Bowman Park.

Because the ground is still soggy, mid-March may not be the best time to ride a bike on the dirt track from Simpson to Bowman Park. But I thought I would try it anyway.

To see how it went, take a look:

This used to be a single-track path along much of its length. But it’s been widened, and I don’t now why.

If you watched the video, you may have noticed the tire tracks left by a four-wheel utility vehicle of the kind the Albany police use to patrol this area.

Or maybe a work crew has hacked its way through there, cleaning up homeless camps and pruning the vegetation as they went.

In any case, like the two major riverside wilderness trails — the Simpson Park trail on the right bank and the Takena Landing trail on the other side — this half-mile link between Simpson and Bowman parks is a route nicely suited to bikes with fat tires.

If you want to ride away from city streets without going out of town, try this trail. But you might wait until it’s been dry for a few weeks. (hh)
