This improvised addition showed up at the east end of Albany’s riverside Dave Clark Path. Today it featured a notice zip-tied to the bench that made me stop to take a look.
Somebody evidently thought they were doing weary hikers a favor by installing that little bench. Making it out of an old plank retrieved from the river added an element of possibly historical interest. It reminds us of the mills that once lined the riverbank, and of the log rafts in days gone by.
But those jagged arm pieces at the ends might make people hesitate. “How sturdy is that thing? Will it take my weight?”
The parks department apparently had similar doubts. It also has to worry about the consequences if a sitter comes to grief. That’s why they posted the notice:
So the bench, photographed on Wednesday afternoon, will not remain there long. Let’s thank the bank builder for the thought and hope he can remove it before the parks crew has to do the job. (hh)
This clearly proves the old adage: “History only goes back so far.”
