A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

It’s a headwind until you turn around

100_0655Riding your bike on the Oregon coast can be a lot of fun or a lot of work. Which it is depends on the wind direction, more than anything.

On Saturday, there was a pretty stiff breeze out of the southwest whipping things up at the central coast. I was headed mostly south, naturally, but only for a while, until I had the good sense to turn around and let the tailwind do all the work.

It pays to take an old mountain bike for a day like that. It may not be fast — especially if the rider is not — but it can handle some pretty rough dirt trails. (hh)
