The repaved section of Sixth Avenue in front of Albany General Hospital, shown on May 7, 2026.
People driving to the Albany Hospital now don’t have to dodge as many potholes as before.
As part of the $1.2 million resurfacing of Elm Street going on now, a 270-foot section of Sixth Avenue in front of Samaritan Albany General Hospital also was repaved last week.
I checked it out on a bike ride Thursday.
The repaved section is the part of Sixth that is a city street. It extends from Elm to the crosswalk in front of the hospital’s main entrance. The street west of the crosswalk is part of the Samaritan property.
The city had announced the Sixth Avenue work last July. But while a few major potholes were filled since then, the resurfacing evidently was postponed until it could be done as part of the Elm Street project this year.
None of this is earthshaking news. But Sixth is the main route to Samaritan’s parking lots. So for people visiting the hospital now and then, it should mean a somewhat smoother ride. (hh)

I got to appreciate it today on the bicycle. I should have pulled into the first (wrong way) driveway though. Even a mountain bike is rough beyond the new pavement.
Any streets in Albany that get fixed are a real bonus, since the streets have slipped into such a bad case of disrepair.
Amen to Good Streets!
Whatever it cost…it’s well worth it…that road was new in 1940…oh my smooth road..
FINALLY , thank you to the city for doing a fine job, now people walking back and forth from the care home to the hospital won’t have be picked up off the ground from tripping in all that mess, and yes the city owned up to knowing they own that part of the street, the hospital owns the rest for their parking lot extension, THINGS LIKE THIS SHOULD BE A SLAM DUNK.
