HASSO HERING

A perspective from Oregon’s mid-Willamette Valley

Gazing out the window from a bed

Written March 10th, 2026 by Hasso Hering

The back of the Capitol rotunda  in Salem, as seen from a hospital bed.

One great thing about being on the seventh floor of Salem Hospital, besides meeting the exceptionally caring and competent staff, is the view.

What is not ideal is the reason I was there, which is that they admitted me. I would rather have been on the bike.

The other reason I was there, in Salem Hospital on the seventh floor, is that the Samaritan hospital in Albany could not do the MRI test I needed. They usually can do it, but not on me because of my pacemaker. Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis could do it, but the hospital was full and did not have an available bed.

So Albany Fire and Rescue took me 20-some miles up the road. Lying on the gurney looking out the back window, I was surprised that the trip took so little time. It was Sunday night and traffic was light.

Anyway, now I’m back home from my stint admiring the Capitol rotunda from afar. Getting back on the bike will take a little longer.

As a result, my posts on this website will likely be less frequent, if indeed they don’t dry up completely for a while. (hh)
