Now that’s the way to fix a gaping pothole!
Potholes in Albany parking lots got a few mentions on his site lately. One of the holes was in an interior driveway of the parking lot serving Bi-Mart, the Sizzler and the Oregon DMV, among others.
Sometime during the past week, the owners or managers of the Bi-Mart lot took care of the problem. They didn’t just get someone to throw a dollop of asphalt into the hole. No, from the looks of it on Sunday, they got a paving contractor to do a thorough job to repair that whole area of the lot.
Since that hole had been featured here twice, the second time with orange traffic cones marking the spot and warning drivers, it’s only fitting that the complete and professional repair job be mentioned too.
It would be great if this approach could be applied to city streets as well. (hh)

Private businesses tend to understand the liabilities involved with uncared for properties. Example: 40 years ago a woman broke her ankle stepping in a pothole in a Fred Meyer parking lot. Besides paying for her medical bills they paid her $80K plus attorney fees. In today’s dollars…a lot more. Cities need to prioritize their spending. There is waste in all of government, more than enough to take care of…liabilities. You need leadership to get it done. Change your leadership!

You can, but probably never do, report all kinds of stuff that will get fixed.
There’s a couple of hundred miles of streets in Albany. They jump on things like potholes all the time when reported by staff or the public. The bigger stuff, like having to dig up and perform major repairs on old streets that are falling apart – people have not been willing to pay the costs – A million a mile and a lot more for bigger streets.
Thanks, Hasso, for pursuing the potholes with vigor. You did more than one blog post on it and got results. (I was one of the first to point out to you (via direct e-mail) the Bi-Mart and the Kohl’s potholes, so I’m pleased with your results.)
City government can’t be trusted to fill a pothole, but it can be trusted to pick winning and losing neighborhoods in the homeless camp site game.
