The new apartments at 2901 Salem Ave. SE have a name: “Salem Crossings.”
It was in 2021 that the Albany Planning Commission approved the site plan for a 22-unit apartment complex on Salem Avenue. Now the project has been built, and it looks almost ready for people to move in.
When I stopped there on a bike ride Tuesday, work was finished for the day. From the outside just about everything looked complete.
For some reason, the developer calls the complex “Salem Crossings.” Which is a little ironic, because when it was approved five years ago the city specified a raised median on Salem Avenue to keep apartment traffic from crossing the street here.
The name might have been in the air that month. In the same meeting in November 2021, the commission also approved the “Riverwood Crossing” subdivision in North Albany that eventually morphed into a townhouse development of 80 lots.
On Salem Avenue, the two new two-story buildings look particularly trim. One building has 14 units and the other has eight. The city permits say each building also has an enclosed bicycle storage room.
Online ads say the two-bedroom units have either 940 or 1,000 square feet, and the rent ranges from $1,675 to $1,775 a month.
People moving there will be living close to Waverly Lake. To get there from Salem Crossings, though, they’ll have to cross the street. (hh)

Each stairwell has this contraption under it. What could that be for?

The contraptions are there most likely to keep people from storing items under the stairs.
Too bad the city were so short sighted on that location, with that mess they call a roundabout and the horrible traffic already on Salem Ave. But, what do I know? We are still driving on roads from the 40’s haven’t been cared for since mid 70’s, and now more congestion….what could possibly go wrong?!
More apartments… Just what we need. Why is the city fixated on this? Our neighborhood is trying to shut down another 108 units next to Lakeshore Lanes. We are being told we have little recourse AND in June a new code takes effect. Neighborhoods will have NO means of appeal! How is that even legal?
