The south side of the bridge replacement project looked like this on Saturday evening.
Work had stopped for the weekend when I got a closer look Saturday at the Cox Creek bridge construction on Northeast Waverly Drive.
Under a $2.4 million contract with Linn County, Legacy Contracting of Stayton has the job of replacing the bridge that had been there since 1957 and was reduced to one lane since 2005.
The contractor is replacing the bridge one lane at a time, starting with the one on the east side. That side had been closed to traffic for the last 21 years because of concern over the strength of the structure.
On both banks of the creek, workers have been building the concrete and steel revetments that will support the 110-foot span. The one on the north side looks close to being done. The other one is in an early stage, as the photo above shows.
Sometimes the construction requires cranes and cement trucks to operate from the one remaining lane, meaning the lane is temporarily closed. Keep that in mind when parking at Simpson Park or Talking Water Gardens, on the north side of the creek. It may take a while to get out.
Work on the bridge replacement started in June. The contract calls for it to be complete by Nov. 20.
The bridge is on my regular bike route to the east side of old Albany. So don’t be surprised to see occasional updates on the project between now and then. (hh)
