Let CARA shoot for tangible gains

Written February 16th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

CARA, the Albany urban renewal program, is about to take the plunge and decide how to spend up to $3.1 million it planned to borrow this budget year. To help it decide, the city council might look for clues in the online survey it has just concluded. Among the roughly 1,800 people who answered the […]

Clean-fuels for jobs? It’s doubtful

Written February 14th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

Gov. John Kitzhaber has framed Oregon’s so-called clean-fuel program in terms of jobs. It sounds like wishful thinking. If this program showed promise of being good for Oregon by actually creating lots of jobs in the private sector without doing any harm, every legislator including Republicans would be for it.

Take a look at this carronade

Written February 14th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

If you want to see an old cannon, corroded but loaded with history, stop by the Albany City Hall and take a look.  Technically it’s a carronade, and the Monteith Historical Society has acquired it because of its role in Albany’s history. In the lobby of City Hall, about 100 people watched on Wednesday as it […]

If you have nothing else to do around Albany, you can watch the water rise, ever so slowly, at the lowest point of Bryant Way just outside the city limits. I was on a bike ride Thursday afternoon when I noticed that the water in this flood channel of the Calapooia River seemed to be about […]

Bill could strangle marijuana dispensaries

Written February 13th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

A bill that would allow cities to strangle but not actually prohibit medical marijuana dispensaries has cleared the state Senate Judiciary Committee. All five committee members including Sen. Betsy Close, R-Albany, voted to send SB 1531 to the Senate floor with a do-pass recommendation.

Alcohol stings: Stop state-assisted crime

Written February 12th, 2014 by Hasso Hering

It is the custom of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission to test checkout clerks at supermarkets and convenience stores by sending minors to buy beer, and then to nail the hapless employees if they fail to prevent the sale. This underhanded practice is wrong, and it should be stopped.
