Garden center, N. Albany landmark, to close

Since 2005, Tom’s Garden Center is just about the first thing drivers see as they enter North Albany via the Lyon Street bridge, especially at night when the big neon sign is lit. Starting no later than July 31, we will see it no more. (See the update below.)

Website lists Albany as a safe city

You may not think so if you were the victim of one of the 1,743 crimes reported last year, but Albany turns out to be among the 100 safest cities in the United States. At least that’s what the people at Reviews.com concluded based on a study of crime statistics published by the FBI.


Lemonade stands: We should support them

As a matter of principle, I stop at kids’ lemonade stands whenever I see one. The end of March seemed kind of early for this summertime tradition, but there it was on Sunday, on Salem Avenue, so I had to get off the bike and buy a cup of what they had.
