Looking south along the pristine Periwinkle Creek Bikepath on Nov. 28, 1025.
On a bike ride the day after Thanksgiving, I was once again impressed by the condition of the Periwinkle Bike Path: No trash, and no improvised camps visible on the wooded banks of the creek.
It’s something to be thankful for when our parks and public spaces serve their intended purpose without annoying distractions like excessive graffiti and trash.
This section of the bikepath, from the wooden bridge on Southeast 15th Avenue south to Queen Avenue, has not always been in such a pleasing shape.
We owe thanks to the community service officers of the Albany police as well as occasional volunteer campaigns for the fact that the recurring problems there have been cleaned up, at least for now.
We should also be hopeful that the people and groups that used to have their tents along this stretch have found a better — or at least another — place to settle down.

Looking north toward Lowe’s in the distance: Not a tent or tarp or shopping cart in sight.

This aging but still functional footbridge connects the Periwinkle path with southeast 15th Avenue.
And while we’re being grateful, let’s be glad for the work of the people who planned a parkway along Periwinkle Creek, along with a bikepath, and got these community assets built some 50 years ago. (hh)

The wooden bridge goes to SE 12th, not 15th.
Not according to Google maps and the addresses across from the bridge. But to get there from Geary, it’s true you have use 12th.
Haven’t heard any recently, but Google Maps and others have “killed” people who followed their maps & got into serious trouble by following said erroneous maps. Just saying…
If you enter 15th from Geary and you’ll see it circles around and “joins” 12th. Except they have a closed (most the time) gate across that opening with a keypad pedestrian entrance.
Change the zoom slightly and it is/isn’t 12th/15th. Seems if they do that, where did 13th & 14th go?;)
Who pays for repairs?
Is there an HOA to pay for that aging but barely functional foot bridge?
No, but if you bring it up in a council meeting, they might be interested in a toll booth at each end.
Please explain how is it “barely functional”? It carries foot & bicycle traffic. What else do you expect from a FOOT bridge?
Did I say “barely functional”? No, I said “still functional.”
I was responding to OG. still waiting for an explanation from them.
